Explore the Norwegian fjords at the end of the 19th century, starting in Hardanger in the south and stretching as far as Romsdalen in the north. The pictures show motifs from everyday life, urban views, landscapes and architecture indicating what interested contemporary travellers at the time.
The pictures look similar to hand-coloured photos but in order to put the postcards into mass production a specific lithographic process called photochrom was used. This technique was widely applied at the turn of the century. In 1985 the Library of Congress in Washington DC got hold of a unique collection counting more than 6000 images from Europe and a few of these were from Norway. The collection came from Zürich, Switzerland.
