This history book focuses on the Court of Gula from the viking times of Harald Fairhair to the 14th century. During the 14th century, the court assembly was moved from Gulen, at the mouth of the Sognefjord, to Bergen. The assembly gathered western Norwegian farming communities and the two major official powers at the time – the king and the church.
From both a Scandinavian and European perspective, the Gulating Law is significant. It reflects the farming communities’ independence and ability, through their assembly representatives, to establish laws, court procedures and judicial registers in areas of common interest with the king and church, during the Middle Ages.
